  18. The latest advice is to use 4.1/5.5 with everything down through the Mac+.  With the 512E and 512, you may want to stick with 3.2/5.3 unless you have a specific reason for changing, and the 128 takes the old 2.0/4.1 combination.

  20. Another corner heard from! One more rumor says that new versions of MacWrite, MacPaint and MacDraw will be released soon. Since this rumor antedates the split off of Aple's software company, we can all be skeptical of this and other rumors more than 30 days old.

  22. Here's a quote from the chief hardware engineer on the Mac II in answer to a question about 3.5 drives with more than 800k capacity: "I can't reveal future products, but the IWM disk controller chip is socketed (in the Mac II)."

  24. Some people want to compare the IBM PS/2 Model 80-041 with the Macintosh II. Well, good luck!  The basic retail price quoted for seomwhat comparable systems is $6995 for the PS/2 Model 80-041 and $6996 for the Mac II.  Sound reasonable?  Wait!
  25. To get a PS/2 Model 80-041 which really compares with the Mac II, you have to also buy an 8037 math coprocessor ($795), a 12-inch monitor (included [13'] in the retail Mac II price quoted) ($685), and the OS/2 operating system ($325) although the OS/2 lacks windowing and graphics capability.
  26. Tack all of that on and the PS/2 Model 80-041 weighs in at $8800. 
  27. But hold on a minute! If you buy a Mac II and add the AST Research Mac286 board for $1499, you can run Mac programs and IBM programs on your Mac II.  With the $300 you have left over you can have a ball, or buy 176 double sided Sony disks in boxes from Corvallis MUG.

  29. Verbatim disks sometimes stick in the 800k drives.  Some people have been filing them down to make them fit.  That's a no-no!
  30. By the way, anyone ever have any luck formatting single sided Verbatim disks double sided?  I have yet to find one that will format double sided.

  36. Outline text imported into Pagemaker from MacDraw may not print on the LaserWriter.  If this happens, type the text directly into Pagemaker instead.

  38. If the LaserWriter takes more than 45 minutes to print a Pagemaker document, turn the LaserWriter off and on again and try one more time.  I hate to do this, but sometimes it is necessary.

  40. Fascinating discovery: The Mac II has a Sony Walkman jack on the back.

  42. It is quite possible that the Mac II will be able to use the new IBM operating system BEFORE IBM computers can do so.
